Broomhill Studio

A small, considered, flexible studio space that punches beyond its size.

The studio centres around the wonderful willow tree that holds a very special place in our clients hearts. They were therefore delighted when BWMA responded to this, by making it a key part of the design both physically and spiritually.

Local quarry dust paths, raised Corten steel planting beds connect the the studio to its surroundings and contrast with the European Larch Cladding, charred and coated with boiled linseed on site by our client.

This was a particular highlight, helping our client to feel involved in the overall thinking and creation, was a joy - it created a camaraderie between architect, engineer, contractor and client often lost in our industry.

Small touches such as the lapped corner cladding detail, a nod to a Scandinavian style log cabin that also avoided material wastage with mitred corners, a galvanised chain drain flows into a local stone filled galvanised pot that in turn flows into the land to keep the willow tree healthy. The reuse of a 200 year old Rubislaw granite lintel as the entry step, our client had been saving this for something special to use it on, combined with the wider landscaping, planters and planting created a cohesive and enchanting escape within our clients garden the can enjoy for many years to come.
